Vernack dropped next to the elves. He’s coming back. He’s just taking his time about it. Seems he’s made quite an impression on some people.

A knot in Drynn’s stomach instantly loosened.

Kyrah’s head shot up. “Did he kill that man?” She held onto her hair like she was ready to pull it out.

Vernack turned his back, like such a question was beneath him. Of course, he didn’t.

“But he—”

Kyrah, I’m sorry he scared you, but I know my companions. Kol has spent most of his life refusing to become a murderer. He isn’t about to become one now.

Drynn shook his head. This was still his fault. “Kyrah, Kol was just upset. He was worried about you. We all were. And if you want to go back to the forest . . .”

Kyrah slumped down. “I thought I could handle it if all the other humans were vicious. I wanted to help you, but Kol—He’s a liar and a thief. You knew he was, but you let him be in charge, just like Andver said.” She said it as if all her worst fears had been confirmed.

Drynn pushed a stick through the dirt. “I trust Kol. I just don’t always agree with him.”

“Then you should’ve said something earlier.” Like it should be the easiest thing in the world. Maybe for her, it was.

“I know. I’m sorry. I just—I just need to try harder.”

“You’re scared of him?”

He was terrified, but not in the way she meant. “He’s my friend, and he is helping us. I just don’t like to make him angry.”

“Because he sets you on fire?”

“No! Because he’s the one who gave me the scales and keeps everyone else from setting me on fire!” Drynn put his stick down. He should have explained this a long time ago, no matter what memories it triggered. “Kyrah, the man you saw is worse than a lot of the magic users. He’s from a group who chained, drugged, and beat me when I first left the forest. He would’ve done the same to you and worse. Kol saved you, just like he helped save me. He is our friend, and if you can’t see that, then maybe the forest is safer for you and you shouldn’t stay.”

Kyrah hesitated, then a smile appeared. “Andver doesn’t know you at all, does he?” She wiped her face and pulled her hair back. “I want to stay with you, and if Kol is helping us, I don’t want him to be angry either. Does he really think we want him to starve?”

Drynn sighed. “I don’t know. I hope not.” If Kol wanted to eat all day long, he should know Drynn would do whatever he could so Kol was able to. Or at least, that’s what Drynn should have been doing instead of moping around, letting the stone dictate his thoughts.

It was pointless, just like Tayvin always said.

“I don’t mind sitting at the bar with him or anything else,” Kyrah said. “I just don’t like it when he doesn’t explain. I really could get it if he did.
